Choice 1: PayPal Personal Account

You can send funds to anyone with an email address in 55 countries and regions. Personal account will even let you accept payments should you sell something via eBay. The catch: you can only accept payments from other PayPal accounts, and you cannot accept credit or debit card payments.

There is no fee for either the Personal account or the transactions you make through it. There is, however, a limit on how much can you receive per month. If you plan to sell a a high volume of product, the Personal account might be too restrictive.

Choice 2: PayPal Premier Account

This type of a PayPal account has all the functionality of the Personal account, plus you can accept credit and debit cards, and bank account payments. Premier account also offers such features as “shopping cart” and payment reporting tools. This account type is good for a serious amateur seller who wants to move items online on a regular basis.

There is a fee to have a Premier account; please check PayPal website for details. The setup process of a Premier account is similar to that of a Personal account. If you currently use a Personal account, you can always upgrade to Premier.

Choice 3: PayPal Business Account

This is the business class of a PayPal account, best suited to individuals running a large scale online business or online store. Business account allows you to operate under your business name, and use Reporting and eBay Tools with no restrictions on transaction size. It is the best choice if you expect complex Accounts Payable. There is broad functionality for the business owners that helps them to manage very large amounts of sales with ease.

Like Premier, there is a fee to have this type of account; please check PayPal website for details. The setup process of a Business account is similar to that of a Premier account. If you currently use either Personal or Premier account, you can upgrade to Business.

How do I set up my new Paypal account?

You can start a new PayPal account within minutes. The initial credit checking has already been done by your credit card company and you bank... now you just need to get PayPal to connect that information to your email address.

What do you need? I've said that before : a valid and reliable email address, valid credit card and/or bank account.
PayPal will record this information in confidence. Your email address will become your unique PayPal ID. Your email and your shipping address are the only two bits of personal information that will be displayed to the seller.

During the setup you will also choose a password to use together with your PayPal ID. Please make sure this password is not easy to guess, and that only you will know and use it!

Note: you may enter multiple credit cards and bank accounts to be used as your “payment sources”. While only one of these financial sources will be designated as “primary”, you can allocate payments from any of your sources at any time.

When you send a PayPal payment, PayPal will debit your primary source of funding within two business days.

How does Paypal withdraw my money?

You may choose either "current balance" or "instant withdrawal" for Payment method.

PayPal is flexible, amateur-friendly, and able to extend its own form of short-term credit. Your choices are as follows:

1)You can just let PayPal withdraw against your credit card or bank account only when you make a purchase. Once you send money, PayPal will send the funds immediately, and then will withdraw the funds from your bank/credit card within two business days. With this option, there is no need to maintain a direct PayPal balance, and there is no fee to use this technique.

2) You may transfer money to PayPal directly, and leave that money in your PayPal account. Although you will not gain interest with this method, it does make it more convenient to separate your online purchasing budget from your regular banking and credit cards. There is no fee to use this technique, either.

The opposite: "How do I withdraw money from PayPal?"

Withdrawing money from PayPal is easy. No, it is not directly through a bank machine. Rather, PayPal credits your credit card or your bank account through a type of wire transferring. Once the money is transferred tp your bank account, you then withdraw like it any other money. While this PayPal "withdrawal" costs nothing, it can take up to 8 business days for the PayPal-to-your-bank transfer to complete.

How do I send money with Paypal?

This is as easy as sending an email.

Like any good online banking institution, PayPal has really made it as convenient and as simple as one could expect. Futhermore, since PayPal is owned by eBay, it integrates very smoothly with eBay auction transactions.

For most eBay purchases:

Most eBay auctions have a "Pay Now" or "Send Payment" link directly on the eBay page in question. If you follow this link, PayPal will fill in the details of the seller and the auction ID number for you. Often, it will also fill in the S & H information as well. All you will need to do is login with your secret PayPal password and email address, and confirm that your shipping address and primary funding source are correct. You add extra notes for the seller (e.g. "please send via US Post"), and the money transfer takes place immediately. A confirmation email will be sent to you, and your bank/credit card will be debited within two days.

Send money by the recipient's email address:

For some eBay auctions, or for personal money transfers, you go directly to Paypal.com and click "send money". You login, and then copy-paste the recipient's email address into the "send money" form. You'll need to add in the details of the transaction, but the process is very straightforward from there. Again, your personal banking information is always concealed from the buyer.

I won an auction! What now?

Follow some easy steps to submit payment.

Shortly after you have won an auction, or ended it with “Buy it now”, you will receive an email invoice for your purchase. Conveniently located right within that invoice should be a large yellow “Pay Now” button. Click on it and it will take you through the motions of sending the payment through PayPal.

Alternatively, you may go through your eBay account, click on "My eBay" at the top of the screen, and it will display that "you need to pay for 1 item". Click on that link, and then choose the "submit payment" link that will appear on your screen. Follow the steps, including logging in with your email address and PayPal password.

After you have made the payment, you will receive a receipt in your email confirming that the payment has been sent to the seller. The seller also gets an email notification of your payment, and he will proceed to ship the item to you. Most likely, you will soon receive a follow-up message from the seller that your item is on its way.

As you will discover for yourself, making PayPal payments is indeed a very easy process. No more sending checks or money orders via snail mail, or typing in your credit card details, and no more stamps and trips to the post office! The convenience of using a PayPal account is why 96 million people use PayPal every day. Easy to set up, easy to use, and it saves you a whole lot of time, an always hot commodity nobody can put the price on!

Part 3: The 8 Big Do's and Don'ts of eBay...

eBay Do #1: Ask Questions.

Never place a bid, or “Buy it now”, without a careful examination of the auction first.

Make sure you know exactly what it is that you’re bidding on at eBay. This may sound like common sense, but it's amazing how many new eBayers lose themselves in the excitement, they forget to pay attention to the details..

Be aware of any conditions the eBay seller might have placed in the ad. These could include: method of payment, shipping and handling cost, amount of time before item will be mailed out, or any extra costs such as taxes or duties, etc. Also, when it comes to an article of clothing, or shoes, make sure to note the size, color, fabric, finishing, any possible flaws, wear and tear, or damage. This is especially important if the item is “used”, “pre-loved”, or “vintage”.

If there is anything you are not quite sure of, get more information from the eBay seller before you bid. You can do it by clicking “Ask seller a question”, either on the right-hand side or near the bottom of the listing.

The vast majority of sellers encourage potential buyers to ask as many questions as necessary to help them make an educated buying decision.

Since you cannot examine the item in person, you have to rely on the information provided by the seller. After all, once you place a winning bid, you are obligated to complete the transaction.

eBay Do #2: Play by the Rules and Obey the Law.

It is to your advantage to know which items are prohibited, questionable, infringing or potentially illegal. Whether you are buying or selling, you need to familiarize yourself with a number of regulations concerning the nature of the item up for bid. The item you could be bidding on might be perfectly legal in seller’s country but prohibited in yours.

Examples: crossbows, DHEA supplements, swords, animal products.

Other times, the item is legal to own anywhere but there might be some restrictions in ways of sending it across the border.

Examples: perfumes in pressurized containers, cigarette lighters.

Once in a while, you might come across an auction of an item prohibited by eBay authorities. Whether or not such item is legal, is irrelevant. The article should not be listed on eBay at all.

Examples: glow sticks, fireworks, human body parts.

To avoid having confiscation of the goods by customs, find out beforehand if they can be shipped without breaking the law. Remember, if the item is confiscated, you are not entitled to a refund.

eBay Do #3: Be Courteous and Polite at All Times.

Have you been outbid by the same buyer 5 times in a row? Still waiting for the seller to reply to a question you sent 3 days ago? It happens. It can be irritating. It’s enough to make some people start sending angry messages, or post nasty comments on the eBay Forum. Don’t let this happen to you.

Remember, a little patience does go a long way. Maybe the seller’s email did not work. Re-send the question. As for the buyer who keeps winning “your” auctions, examine the bids. Are you always losing by a tiny amount just seconds before the auction end? Sounds like a “sniping” software in action. Yes, it’s completely legal, and it can be very effective. Give it a try, or set a higher maximum bid.

eBay Do #4: Tell the World When You Are Happy.

The power of Feedback is enormous – it can make or break a seller, or a buyer. It is the single, most comprehensive, word of mouth “performance review” of every eBay member. If you feel your transaction went smoothly, be sure to say it with Feedback. Remember, eBay Feedback is forever!

It takes time and hard work to earn, and keep, a perfect Feedback. If you are not so happy with how things went, contact the seller first. Most sellers do care a whole lot about making sure their buyers are satisfied, and will do their best to rectify the problem.

eBay Don't #1: Don't Bid Without First Reading the Ad Carefully.

Once in a while, we all come across something we just can’t pass up. Perhaps you just found that awesome mp3 player you’ve always wanted. The bid is only a dollar, and there is only one mp3 player available. What do you do?

The reflex reaction would be to bid immediately. Wrong! Correct action is to carefully read the listing, including all information on shipping and handling costs, method of payment, etc.
Some sellers deliberately list an expensive, sought-after item for cheap to catch the novice buyer off guard. Grossly overpriced shipping and handling charge is where they get you, if you’re not careful! This underhanded trick operates just within the boundaries of eBay policy... and this trick punishes the lazy user who forgets to read the full ad.

eBay Don't #2: Don't Engage in Bidding Wars.

Bidding wars won't work for you, unless you are the seller. Often, the seller sets the starting price extremely low to entice as many buyers as possible. The buyers start bidding high and often, which starts the “bidding war”, a frenzy of over-excited buyers.

This behavior is common amongst eBay newbies who are yet to learn when to keep bidding, and when to let it go. Quite often, seconds before the auction closes, a patient veteran buyer will outbid the novices by mere pennies.

If you are bidding on a rare, hard to find article, it’s understandable you might be willing to bid high. Sometimes, it’s the only way you can win it. Other times, with a little patience and research, you could find another auction for a similar item, at considerably lower price. The feeling of victory is much stronger if you win the auction without breaking the bank.

So the tough lesson here is to show restraint and patience... and to learn how to bid in the last minutes of the auction.

eBay Don't #3: Don't Rush to Negative Feedback.

The vast majority of eBay sellers want your buying experience to be a happy one, but sometimes, things go awry. Shipping delays are the most common issue, especially if your item is mailed to you from very far away. Cross-border inspections are also about everyone’s safety, and not just to inconvenience you.

The more borders to cross, the longer it may take before you receive your goodies. Many new eBayers fail to recognize this and rush in to leave a negative Feedback for the seller only to regret it the next day when their purchase arrives. Although the actual Feedback message can be mutually withdrawn, the statistics will show there was an unfavorable Feedback left before. These statistics can make any future sales, or purchases, very difficult.

Again, Feedback is forever, and a little patience goes a long way. If you believe there is an undue delay in receiving your goods, contact the seller. If your package is indeed lost, many sellers will offer to replace the item, or issue a refund.

eBay Don't #4: Don't Bid Over Your Head.

Shopping online can be a lot of fun, providing it doesn’t get you in financial hot water. eBay, in particular, comes with all the convenience of finding just about anything you can think of without having to physically travel the world for it.

Bidding, like gambling, can become addictive. Whether it’s one large bid, or several small ones, the total can quickly add up. Remember, you are also expected to pay for any and all shipping, handling, and insurance costs associated with winning an auction. Unless “money is no object”, don’t spend your next month’s mortgage payment on that cute Prada just because it’s here now. “Buyer’s remorse” doesn’t work on eBay!

So the biggest Don't of all: be brutally truthful to yourself about how much money you can afford to spend on that eBay item!

Part 2: What a Transaction at eBay.com Looks Like.

Note: this scenario is simplified for learning purposes. An fully explained exemple is the best for you to understand exactly what is happening.

Scenario: Seller Christine is a registered eBay member who has been buying and selling for eleven months. Because Christine has successfully bought and sold 14 times, she has earned an eBay “positive feedback rating” of 14. Shauna’s name will appear onscreen as follows:

She is very motivated to continue earning positive feedback and the customer trust that goes with it. Christine hopes to one day achieve a positive feedback rating of 1000.

STEP 1: The Listing Stage:

Christine decides she wants to sell her used Swiss Army Watch at eBay. Originally a $750 item, the watch is 7 years old and in good condition. She hopes to get $500USD for it, but will settle for $400.

She takes some digital photos of the watch, and she takes an hour to carefully author a web page ad that describes the watch to potential buyers. She then lists the web page advertisement and photos at eBay at 3:04pm on a Saturday afternoon. She pays a small initial listing fee of a couple dollars.

Christine ’s starting bid for the watch is $100USD, and the auction is slated to run for 7 days. Shauna has also added a “Buy It Now” option set at $450, to motivate buyers to end the auction early, and she promises to charge $15 shipping and handling for any USA customers.

STEP 2: The Selling (Auction Bidding) Stage:

By the fifth day of the auction, Christine has two bids on the Swiss Army watch: Buyer Michael (feedback rating of 42) has bid $100, and Buyer John (feedback rating of 29) has bid $101.

On the sixth day of the auction, three new eBay buyers, Katrine (rating of 3), Jack (rating of 4), and maria (rating of 1), also discover the watch, and they make “nickel-and-dime bids” of $120, $121, and $122 respectively. Although Christine would like to see higher bids, she is pleased to see a small bidding frenzy happening on her watch. The Swiss Army watch high bid is now $122.

Day 7 of the auction comes, and a small bidding frenzy ensues over the Swiss Army watch. Maria, the novice buyer, ambitiously bids $175 five hours before the auction end. Maria’s $175 is called her secret “bid ceiling”. Michael, also wanting the watch, counterbids $150 and $160, but is automatically outbid by maria’s $175 secret “bid ceiling”. The auction high bid is now $161. David jumps in 11:15am and bids $325. david does beat maria’s bid ceiling, so he is now the high bidder at $176, with a new secret bid ceiling of $325.
